Welcome to St. Andrew's!
The mission of St. Andrew's
Episcopal Church of College
Park in the Diocese
of Washington is to be a welcoming
and supportive community of faith.
Which offers itself to the Lord Jesus Christ in corporate
worship.
Which has a special care
for all God's children in its neighborhood.
And which stimulates its members to be open to God's
call to risk, to grow,
and to use their gifts in service to others.
Sunday Eucharist Services: 8:00 a.m. (Rite 1) and 10:30 a.m. (Rite 2). Wednesday Eucharist: 12:00 p.m. Please view the campus ministry
page for additional services offered in partnership with the Episcopal/Anglican Campus Ministry at the University of Maryland. Anyone who is seeking a deeper
relationship with Jesus Christ is welcome to receive communion at St. Andrew's.
Welcome Families with Children
St. Andrew's is blessed to have a thriving population of families with children and a strong Sunday School program offered through our Christian
Formation ministry. Children are active participants in our services and we strive as a community to support them in their spiritual journey.
Nursery Care
Children under the age of 3 are welcome in our nursery from 9 am - noon each Sunday.
Sunday School
All children, ages 3 - 5th grade are invited to attend Sunday School classes, beginning at 10:30 am on most Sundays from mid-September to the end of May. The
pre-school (3 and 4 years old) and the intermediate (3rd to 6th grade) classes meet in the lower
level of the parish hall. The primary class (5 to 7 years old) meets in the large classroom across from the nursery. Children will join their parents at the Peace. Parents should complete a registration form — extras are available on the
Christian Formation bulletin board in the parish hall. Additional details about Sunday School curriculum are on the Christian Formation page. Parents: Please be sure to complete and return
a registration form.
Youth Group
The St. Andrew's Youth Group is on hiatus pending the hiring of our new Director of Children and Youth Ministries. In the interim, many of our youth service as acolytes
and participate in other parish activities.
Welcome UMD Students
We welcome all students to our community. Please visit our Collegia Ministry page for details about the many activities linking
St. Andrew's with the University of Maryland through the Episcopal/Anglican Campus Ministry.
If you would like to meet other students or our Chaplain, contact Fr. Peter Antoci at
or 301-405-8453.
Free Covered Parking Every Sunday
The College Park garage above the Ledo restaurant on the corner of Knox Road and Yale Avenue is free all day on Sunday. Please keep this in mind as our surrounding area continues to grow and
take on a more urban feel. The garage has an elevator and is about two blocks away on Yale Avenue from our front door. You may (or may not) see the parking meters removed from the Book Exchange parking lot
across the street from St. Andrew's in the next month or so. Be assured that the management of the Book Exchange continues to be friendly to St. Andrews and that we are welcome to
park on the lot on Sunday mornings. Check with the office before parking there for other parish events. Sometime in the next year we expect to see some major changes in the
Book Exchange property, so remember the garage when the time comes.

USHERS NEEDED
Ushers play a crucial role in the service that we do not often notice. The first person every visitor sees is the usher and first impressions count a lot. Otherwise, if the ushers are doing a really good job, we should not notice them much. They blend into the service as quiet guides and servers. But ushers are important, and we do not have enough of them. If this kind of quiet serving is something that appeals to you, please consider becoming a St. Andrew's Usher. You can see Alan Sinclair before or after the 10:30 Service or call Alan at 301-474-7745, (e-mail: alsin6206@verizon.net) or you can call the church office (301-864-8880) to get more information.

Please remember to bring something nice to contribute. All food must be in original unopened containers to comply with county health regulations.

Shrine Mont -- change of pace in worship
Each fall Saint Andrew's takes a weekend away in the hills of western Virginia. One of the enjoyable changes of pace is the informality of the worship services. While we do continue to use the Book of Common Prayer services are held in the many-windowed ballroom or at the lovely outdoor chapel, technically a Cathedral, the Shrine in Shrine Mont.

Free Work Available
At absolutely no cost to participants, a variety of interesting tasks will be available on a first come, first served basis on Saturday, September 8. Please save the date and plan to come. Hours will be 9 am to 2 pm. If you come early you may get a chance to paint something, but those jobs go fast, so don't be disappointed if you end up with everyone's favorites: gardening and cleaning things. There will also be some semi-skilled tasks, such as fixing doors and such. Lunch will be provided. This event is sometimes called a Parish Work Day, but it won't seem like work to be here at St A's with friendly people on a lovely September day. Also, the Bishop is coming; and she's bringing her best white gloves. Don't disappoint her.

Health Tips
Building a Healthy Parish One Tip at a Time
Watermelon is not only refreshing on a hot summer, it is also packed full of a powerful antioxidant called lycopene. Lycopene has been shown to help reduce the risk of heart attacks and certain types of cancers. Watermelon is fat free and a source of vitamins A, B6, C, and thiamin. What should I do? Chill, slice and enjoy! For more information go to: http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/ar/archive/jun02/lyco0602.htm

Please Welcome
The Rev. Noreen Seiler-Dubay, who will be
presiding and preaching at both services on August 12th
and August 19th. Noreen served as an interim rector in three parishes before becoming rector of St. Matthew's. She is one of the most sought-after supply priests in the Diocese of Washington, and we are happy to have her with us today. Assisting Noreen at the altar will be The Rev. Elizabeth Ewing, our new Children's and Youth Minister. (Elizabeth will leave for Children's Chapel, and will return when the children do.) If you have a pastoral emergency and it is during our normal office hours, please call the office (301-864-8880); Elizabeth will get back to you as quickly as possible. Elizabeth will also be carrying the emergency pastoral care phone this week (202-368-2169).

Rector's Continuing Education
Earlier this year, Carol applied for and was accepted as a fellow in the Chautauqua Institute New Clergy Program. The New Clergy program at Chautauqua brings together clergy from a variety of denominations (Episcopal, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Baptist, UCC/Disciples of Christ, and Methodist) as well as leaders of Jewish and Muslim congregations who have been ordained for less than seven years. In addition to attending worship services, public lectures on topics of the day (the week's theme is "Radicalism"), and sessions specifically devoted to issues of clergy development and leadership, fellows have a chance to attend concerts, plays, and enjoy time with their spouses. Carol and Ty are looking forward to seeing parishioner Sallie Holder at Chautauqua while they are there.

A note on the sound system
You may have noticed that we have a nice looking new wooden box behind the first pillar on the right at the front of the pews. This is future home of our sound system, which has been located behind the organist. While Dale has enjoyed the company of the sound engineer each Sunday, it has made for close quarters. The project is being overseen by Ted David (Thank you Ted!) with contributions from many other parishioners, and friends. Please be patient while the improvements are being made. They will allow for better system and improved recording capabilities.

From the Environment Committee
Don't be a drip - fix that leak! Leaky faucets can waste thousands of gallons of water each year, like money down the drain. Repair or replace old or damaged fixtures. If you're not sure you have a leak, check the water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, you probably have a leak.
