Christian Formation
Sunday School
The St. Andrew's Sunday School (10:30-11:45 am) comprises three classes covering pre-school to 5th grade children. The pre-school and primary classes are based on the Godly Play program. The Intermediate class uses other published curricula and will be studying Old Testament heroes in the fall of 2007. Regular classes meet from September through May.
During the summer months, children ages 3 through 7 attend Children's Chapel during the liturgy of the word. They hear stories from the Old Testament using “Beulah Land” felt board materials. Children's Chapel continues to be held on special occasions when it is important for all children to be present at the beginning of the 10:30 am liturgy. This includes St. Andrew's Day, Palm Sunday, and Easter.
Additional activities for children include making decorations for the Warm Nights shelter, preparing and burying the Alleluia banner before the beginning of Lent, a Seder during the Sunday school hour during Lent, collecting non-perishable food on the first Sunday of each month (the “Peanut Butter project”), a Lantern Walk for St. Martin's Day, and the no-rehearsal Christmas pageant on Christmas Eve.
Youth Group
The combined middle school and high school Youth Groups meet on Sunday mornings from 9:30-10:20 am.
The Middle School Youth (grades 6-8) meets monthly on the 3rd Friday for a variety of activities, including movies, games, study and discussion. Both groups participate in outreach projects throughout the year; they also meet on occasional Friday evenings for social events with youth from Holy Trinity, Bowie; St. Christopher's, New Carrollton; and St. George's, Glenn Dale.
Childcare for Infants and Toddlers
A nursery, staffed each week by one professional and one volunteer, is available for children through age 3 from 9:00 am until noon on Sundays. Childcare for children ages 3-10 is provided from 9:00-10:15 am so parents can attend choir rehearsal and Adult Forum.
All adults and older teens are encouraged to help care for our youngest members; many hands will make light work. Volunteers are asked to participate in a seminar, Safeguarding God's Children, offered once a month at churches around the diocese. A current schedule of volunteers is available online, and you can e-mail Neely Kelley to sign up.
Adult Formation
The Adult Forum meets from 9:30-10:20 am every Sunday except during the summer (June-August). Discussions cover a wide range of topics. Each lesson is self-contained, so you may join at any time.
Bible Study
The St. Andrew's Bible Fellowship Group meets from September-May on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month from 7:30-9:00 pm in the Emack room. The group will begin studying Paul's Epistle to the Romans in the fall. The introductory meeting will be on Tuesday, August 28th at 7:30. Contact Nancy Maestri for more information.
Education for Ministry
The Education for Ministry (EfM) program is designed to help lay members of the church discover and develop their ministries. The St. Andrew's group recently graduated six members from the four-year course. We meet on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-9:15 pm in the Rectors' Lounge. Contact Nancy Maestri for more information.
